چکیده

The ultraviolet spectral slope of individual Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars, measured using IUE observations, varies considerablywith time. Neither accretiondisks nor opticallythin emission models can explain these variations. A superimposition of two components can easily solve the problem. We propose here a method based on the variability properties of these objects to disentangle various components of constant spectral shape. This method is applied to the IUE spectra of a set of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. A variable component and a stable component are thereby obtained for each object. The variable component can be explained by reprocessing on an accretion disk or by free-free emission, but with some diiculties. The variable component of 3C 273 also has been estimated in the optical domain. It is not compatible with optically thin emission, but marginally compatible with reprocessing on an accretion disk.

Accretion around supermassive black holes: the detection of the Balmer edge signature from quasars

The ultraviolet/optical continuum of quasars is thought to be from an accretion flow around a supermassive black hole, and it dominates the radiative output of quasars. However, the nature of this emission, often called the Big Blue Bump, has not been well understood. Robust evidence for its thermal nature would be a continuum opacity edge feature intrinsic to this component, but this has not b...

The dust-eliminated shape of quasar spectra in the near-infrared: a hidden part of the big blue bump

The near-infrared shape of the big blue bump component in quasar spectra has been essentially unknown. It usually cannot be observed directly, due to the strong hot dust emission which dominates quasar spectra longward of ∼1μm. However this is quite an important part of the spectrum theoretically. At least bare disk models provide quite a robust prediction for the overall continuum shape in the...

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks

A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...

Black Hole Winds

We show that black holes accreting at or above the Eddington rate probably produce winds which are optically thick in the continuum, whether in quasars or X–ray bina-ries. The photospheric radius and outflow speed are proportional to ˙ M 2 out and ˙ M −1 out respectively, where ˙ M out is the mass outflow rate. The outflow momentum rate is always of order L Edd /c. Blackbody emission from these...

Evidence for Polarized Synchrotron Components in Radio-optical Aligned Quasars

A tendency for the axes of double-lobed radio quasars to be aligned with the electric vectors of optical polarization in the active galactic nuclei is well-known. However, the origin of the polarization and reason behind its correlation with radio morphology is not yet established. From accurate spectropolarimetry of 7 quasars which show this alignment effect, we find that the polarization is u...
